OUR POLICIES
Our policies, as represented in full by our contracts, provide further detail and depth to our values and goals. We are happy to walk you through our contracts upon request, with the caveat that we are frequently refining them.
Below, you'll find a high-level overview of our policies, processes, and expectations.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Our Application Form serves as a brief “get to know you” for us to understand what your desires and goals for a borzoi are. Once your application has been received, we’ll move through the following steps:
SCREENING PROCESS
Your application has been submitted and has been approved on paper.
We will conduct a phone or Zoom interview.
We will contact your references, including your current veterinarian.
We will perform a home check IN PERSON, either by ourselves or a local borzoi person acting as our representative. These are typically done after a confirmed breeding (covid safety precautions will apply if still relevant at that point in time).
We will either approve you for a puppy, let you know what steps to take to become approved, or decline.
PLACEMENT PROCESS
Approved applicants are added to our "applicant pool". This pool does not operate on a first-come first-serve basis, as we make no guarantees that the right puppy for a home will be in any given litter, and in some instances, prospective homes may need to wait for a following litter. However, we do try and respect how long an applicant has been in the pool when making matches.
When a litter is confirmed on ultrasound, we will reach out to those in the applicant pool to verify interest in the litter. Once puppies are born, we will update approved applicants on the available number of puppies in the litter and move on to the matching process (see below).
We do not require deposits. Any party (including us) is free to back out at any time during the placement process, and we welcome ongoing and transparent communication. We will do our best to keep each applicant informed as to whether we think we will have a puppy for them.
Payment is due upon pickup. See PRICING above for details.
We don't have payment plan options, however, we are open to discussing this with approved applicants.
MATCHING PROCESS
It is very important to us to set homes and puppies up to succeed with the best chances possible! To inform our matches, we rely on careful observation and evaluation of our puppies, including the following guidelines:
Beginning at 6 weeks old and every two weeks thereafter, puppies are evaluated for conformation. This helps us to select for which puppy(ies) we will keep, which puppy(ies) are suitable to show/performance/breeding prospect homes, and if any physical abnormalities are noted. We make an effort to have unaffiliated, experienced borzoi or other sighthound breeders examine our litters around 8 weeks old for outside input.
Puppies are evaluated by a veterinarian at the time of at least their first two rounds of vaccinations, including evaluation for heart murmurs, palate deformities, umbilical hernias, how teeth are erupting, testicles dropping (if male), and stool samples to check for parasites prior to go-home.
Around 10 weeks old, puppies will have third-party temperament evaluations. We will make notes on their assessments as well as our own temperament observations to include in the puppies’ go-home guides. Temperament plays a primary role in informing home placements.
After temperament evals, we will finalize matches based on predicted suitability. We make matches based on the goals of each home, the home environment, the puppy's aptitudes, drives, and other aspects of their behavior, as well as physical traits desired by the home. We make no guarantees on show/performance/breeding suitability.
We value the trust our homes place in us to select the right puppy for them, and want you to be a part of the selection process by continuing to update us on your desires before and after puppies are on the ground. We may have one specific puppy in mind for you, or several good fits to choose from, depending on the litter.
If an applicant is drawn to an individual puppy, they are welcome to tell us! If that puppy is otherwise available and a great fit, we will do our best to honor these matches.
Homes that we have tentatively matched a puppy to will receive a copy of our contract to review (available earlier upon request), and the opportunity to officially accept/decline the puppy placement.
Puppies go to their new homes at 12 weeks old. We can arrange for longer boarding if needed, however, we strongly recommend sticking to 12 weeks so you can begin developing a bond and allow your puppy to get to know their new environment before their critical socialization window closes at 14 weeks.
OUR COMMITMENTS
HEALTH
We health test all of our adult dogs (not just those used in breeding) in compliance with the OFA’s CHIC program. We authorize all results to be listed publicly in the OFA’s database.
We breed to reduce genetic health conditions. However, if one of our dogs does develop a genetic issue, we will be there to support their primary owner. We also require all dogs in our program to receive a necropsy upon death, whenever physically feasible, to better understand the health issues in our lines.
All of our dogs/puppies have received age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormings, and medical exams with a veterinarian prior to going to their new homes.
All dogs/puppies are microchipped.
TEMPERAMENT
We are committed to raising companion dogs who will be enjoyable, loving members of their families. We provide critical socialization experiences in controlled settings following Puppy Culture & AviDog protocols, and supply our new homes with straight-forward guides on further socialization and training.
We will provide support and vetted referrals to behavioral resources if any temperament concerns develop during the lifetime of our dogs/puppies. We know how heavy it can be to navigate behavior issues, and we are here to support even the unexpected or toughest circumstances should they arise.
Our puppies are raised around other borzoi, small dogs, cats, goats, and chickens. For this reason, we are often able to place puppies in homes with these species/sizes with appropriate education on risks as well as confidence in the home's ability to manage safety.
PLACEMENT & SHIPPING
LOCATION
Our puppies are exclusively placed within a day's driving distance of either Granite Falls, WA or Portland, OR. Exceptions are only made for individuals we have a prior relationship with.
We will not ship puppies; you must come to us to meet and pick-up your new family member.
ONGOING SUPPORT
We’re here to mentor newcomers to the breed! Whether you have a puppy from us or not, we’re always happy to chat borzoi and provide feedback or referrals to resources we love.
We are committed to every puppy we bring into the world. We will be here to answer questions and provide support for the lifetime of your Saxafrax-Wild Rushes pup.
We will always, ALWAYS, accept the return of one of our dogs or puppies, under any circumstance, at any age.
In return, we expect our homes to remain in close contact with us for the lifetime of their puppies/dogs (and beyond, if you like!). If that does not appeal to you, we're not the right breeders for you, and that's okay!
We are happy to refer applicants to our previous puppy buyers and/or other borzoi breeders in the community to discuss their experiences with us.
PRICING; CO-OWNERSHIP & BREEDING RIGHTS
We offer tiered pricing:
$2,000 - Companion only
$1,800 - First-time show or performance home
$1,500 - Experienced show or performance home
$0-$1,000 - Show/Performance/Breeding Prospect Co-ownership
Sliding scale pricing for BIPOC homes
Companion dogs/puppies are registered with AKC Limited Registration, and are ineligible for breeding or competing in AKC conformation.
Show, performance, and/or breeding prospect dogs/puppies will be given Full AKC Registration for approved homes. One of us (Maren or Elyse) will remain on the dog/puppy’s registration as an “on paper co-owner” for first-time borzoi owners who are interested in a show/performance prospect. Price varies depending on experience and, when applicable, negotiated terms of co-ownership.
If you are interested in co-owning a show/performance/breeding prospect as a satellite of our breeding program, we are happy to discuss this type of arrangement.
Our contract specifies that any dog or bitch deemed suitable for breeding must complete the OFA’s CHIC program in health testing for both the individual and their prospective mating partner*. Additionally, in most cases, the dog or bitch must have attained their conformation and/or performance championship and be within the ages of 3-7 to breed.
* Exceptions may apply for frozen semen breedings.
